Sensors are key to numerous advances addressing industry-specific needs, but also to the development of next-generation consumer-centric applications. Sensors are necessary for collecting information, which is key in realizing the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT). The sensor industry is experiencing high innovation in biosensors, wearable technology, terahertz sensing and high resolution image sensors, under others. Biosensors, mainly wearable technology developments, are allowing for constant monitoring of physiological signals for applications not only within the healthcare industry but also in fitness and sports. Technologies for environmental monitoring, important due to the global concern about pollution, and imaging sensors for different applications, including augmented reality, are also part of the innovation focus. Research institutions, a high number of start-ups and big companies are all part of the innovation taking place in the sensor industry.
