Molding and extrusion are some of the oldest industrial processes for large scale forming of materials. In spite of much attention and focus on additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, these processes remain the main stay of today’s manufacturing. The R&D efforts on these processes focus on improving efficiency and quality, and expanding their scope to new applications, as well as using them to create and manufacture innovative materials to address new applications. While most R&D efforts on AM are still university and research focused, the new developments in these more mature processes such as molding and extrusion is conducted by small and large companies.
