In developed countries apart from the traditional and natural contaminants of water, new ones are emerging that may pose a risk to human health, such as antibiotics or hormones. In industrial sectors more efficient systems are needed to replace the current energy intensive treatment techniques and to reduce the overall water consumption. Technologies to deal with these problems have been widely researched and developed.
