Materials for Wearable Electronics

The future of mobile electronics is wearable electronics - not only wearable gadgets like smartwatches and fitness trackers but also clothing with electronics embedded in it. This emerging technology is already showing signs of rapid growth and is projected to become a $20+ billion market within the next five years. Wearable electronics is likely to have an impact on virtually every field including health and medicine, fitness, education, entertainment, transportation and fashion. It will not only impact how humans interact with technology but revolutionize the way in which humans view their surroundings and interact with each other in the future. There are two major materials technologies driving wearable electronics technologies- flexible electronics and power technologies. Electronic circuits, sensors, communication systems etc. are all being integrated into flexible substrates, all of which require lightweight, reliable portable power sources, also integrated within the wearable platform. Wearable electronics is therefore, a critical area for material technology and innovation.
