Advanced materials are a critical element of medical device design and
production. Traditional materials such as metals and metallic compounds are giving way to high performance thermoplastics and other advanced materials that offer advantages such as improved biocompability and reduced weight. The use of plastics and new materials is also being spurred by the increasing use of 3D printing and other advanced manufacturing practices for medical devices. 3D printing holds great promise for innovation in the medical device industry and allows the design and manufacture of highly accurate, and customizable devices. New material technologies are being developed to take advantage of this revolutionary manufacturing process for the biomedical industry.
