Materials Technology for Flat Panel Displays III
We provide an update on developments in displays with a materials technology angle. OLED displays are finally on the of brink challenging LCD, having resolved many of the materials related performance and lifetime issues. Electronic paper has taken hold in the e-reader segment with new color technologies emerging. E-paper related technologies of note are transflective LCD e-paper and electrowetting. On the cutting edge, we also have nanoscaled quantum dots coming closer to commercialization while demonstrating superior luminous efficiency to OLED. New mobile devices like smart phones and iPads require touch screens, which demand a longer term replacement for ITO, so this has become an opportunity for carbon nanomaterials. Haptic technology (tactile feedback) for touch screens is also developing. Finally, “glasses-free” 3D displays using parallax barriers have become commercial in the last two years.
