The medical device industry sets stringent demands for materials. One of the key and traditional segments for materials is in implantable devices where biocompatibility and functional durability are essential. This is the first segment of this newsletter, but we also present some other interesting developments in medical devices such as a holey metamaterial for enhanced ultrasonic imaging. Furthermore, materials technology, more specifically, nanotechnology, is driving new developments in drug delivery. Finally, we also cover novel materials technology for wound care, which ranges from dressings that detect pathogens to new adhesives technology.
