Materials Technology for Flat Panel Displays II
In display technology, LCD and Plasma flat panels eclipsed conventional CRTs in volume several years ago. LCD technology is becoming more efficient in manufacturing and new technological developments, including many that are materials related, are helping to overcome some of its inherent weaknesses. Emerging technologies include OLEDs, FEDs and SEDs; we also cover some other interesting early stage developments. OLED has been touted as the next display technology but has not proven to be commercially viable and still suffers from lifetime issues in the blue color space. In the past year so-called electronic paper has become mass market with e-readers that are based on electrophoretic displays, but we postpone coverage of this segment to a later edition. In this Newsletter we provide an update on the latest technical developments with a focus on materials and process related technology.
