Joining technologies are critical to the manufacturing industry, and represent an estimated $50 billion industry. While conventional joining methods like welding have improved over the years, alternative joining technologies such as adhesive bonding are emerging. Adhesive bonding technologies have to demonstrate that they can meet demanding mechanical performance requirements. The automotive and aerospace industries are particularly interested in adhesives and other hybrid joining methods because it helps reduce weight and can be applied to dissimilar materials and composites. This newsletter focuses recent developments in joining of polymers and composites. It also looks at recent developments in soldering with an emphasis on specialty applications relating to nanotechnology.
