Materials Technology for RFID II
RFID made significant strides in commercial adoption during 2005-6. RFID was adopted in high visibility e-passport and credit card platforms, which led to a lot of media coverage and controversy. In the key supply chain end-use market the Wal-Mart and DoD mandates drove the rapid and widespread adoption of passive Si based RFID EPC. One supplier announced availability of five cent tags in very large quantities in mid-2006. But the drive toward item level tracking needs to reach the one cent leval; therefore needs another technology platform, namely printable ICs or other chipless platform. In this NL we highlight recent technology developments from a materials and process technology perspective.
