The food and beverage packaging industry continues to grow strongly, and bio-based plastic packaging is expected to make huge market gains in the next decade. Driven by both the growth in the packaging industry and increasingly stringent regulations for petroleum based plastics, bioplastics are expected to have an impact on both rigid and flexible packaging. While currently restricted to organic foods and specialty packaging, bioplastics are poised to enter the commodity packaging market within the next few years, with brand owners such as Coca-Cola, Heinz and Pepsi committing large resources to increasing the use of bioplastics in their products. Current bioplastics technologies such as starch blend, Bio-PET, PLA and PLA blends will continue to increase market share but new formulations such as PBS and PEF can be game changers. Materials development will therefore play a critical role in the future of
